The Public Health and Research Department

The Public Health and Research Department at Mengo Hospital is a newly established unit that consolidates and strengthens the hospital’s efforts in community-based healthcare, research coordination, and comprehensive HIV services. This department reflects our commitment to extending quality care beyond hospital walls, reaching underserved populations, and generating evidence to improve health outcomes.

Our Mandate:

This department oversees a diverse portfolio of programs and services including:

Community-Based Health Care Department (CBHC)

The Community-Based Health Care (CBHC) Department at Mengo Hospital is dedicated to extending holistic health services beyond hospital walls and into the communities we serve.

Grounded in Mengo’s vision of compassionate, patient-centered care, the department fosters preventive, promotive, and participatory health approaches that empower individuals, families, and communities to take charge of their well-being.

The department integrates a wide range of services, including community health outreaches, health education and promotion, immunization/ vaccination, and Integrated medical care activities within the community.  It plays a pivotal role in supervising all government-supported immunization activities, ensuring effective coverage and follow-up for childhood and adolescent vaccines within catchment areas.

Success stories

Youth Engagement and HPV Vaccination Uptake

Working closely with schools and adolescent clinics, the CBHC team has helped increase HPV vaccination coverage among girls aged 9–14 in Kampala Central Division. Thanks to school-based education campaigns and collaboration with local leaders, vaccine hesitancy decreased. Thereby supporting the WHO Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer as a Public Health Problem, particularly the 90–70–90 targets.

Faith-Based Outreach and Health Literacy

CBHC’s model of integrating health education into  Faith based structures and churches is a culturally sensitive and effective tool. The faith community is reached with information on communicable and Non communicable disease prevention, resulting in increased health-seeking behaviors and early diagnosis of several conditions.

Research Department

Mengo Hospital’s newly established Research Department provides strategic leadership, coordination, and oversight of all clinical and operational research activities across the hospital. Rooted in the hospital’s mission to deliver evidence-based and patient-centered care, the department fosters a culture of inquiry, innovation, and ethical research that advances health outcomes for the communities we serve.

The department works closely with investigators, students, and external partners to design, implement, monitor, and evaluate studies across a wide range of disciplines spanning infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and community health interventions.

The Research Department also supports research capacity building through mentorship, training, and technical assistance for junior researchers, students, and staff. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, the department contributes to national health priorities and global scientific advancement.

In line with national and international standards, all research conducted within Mengo Hospital facilities or involving its staff must be reviewed and approved by the hospital’s  Research and Ethics Committee (REC)

The Mengo Hospital REC, established in 2009, is registered with the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST), plays a vital role in safeguarding the rights, safety, and welfare of research participants. It ensures that all studies adhere to strict ethical principles, including informed consent, confidentiality, and scientific integrity.
