Buganda Kingdom

The Kingdom of Buganda is a foundational and long-standing partner of Mengo Hospital, with ties that trace back over a century to the Kingdom’s historic invitation to missionaries; a move that led to the hospital’s establishment in 1897. This deep-rooted partnership continues to thrive, grounded in a shared commitment to accessible, high-quality healthcare.
In 2025, the Kingdom formally entrusted Mengo Hospital with the management of the newly built Kabaka Mutesa II Health Center IV in Mityana, reinforcing their operational alliance. The partnership seeks to bring essential medical services closer to the people of Buganda, especially in underserved areas.
Together, the Kingdom and the hospital have launched several impactful initiatives, including free community eye screenings, distribution of reading glasses, and joint health awareness efforts during major cultural events. Additionally, Mengo Hospital is a key faith-based provider in the “Tubele Balamu” health insurance scheme—an initiative of the Buganda Kingdom designed to make treatment for chronic conditions like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease more affordable.
This partnership is not only a reflection of historical bonds but also a forward-looking collaboration focused on building a healthier Buganda and Uganda at large.
