Church of Uganda

Mengo Hospital is a proud institution of the Church of Uganda, founded in 1897 by Dr. Sir Albert Ruskin Cook under the Church Missionary Society. As the first modern hospital in East Africa, Mengo was established with a vision of combining clinical excellence with compassionate, faith-driven care.
Today, the hospital remains a vital arm of the Church’s health ministry, officially recognized as one of its key institutions. It upholds the Church of Uganda’s mission to deliver holistic, sustainable, and Christ-centered healthcare, bearing witness to the healing ministry of Jesus.
Mengo Hospital also serves as a teaching hospital for Uganda Christian University, contributing to the formation of ethical, skilled, and spiritually grounded medical professionals. Its long-standing alignment with the Church continues to shape its values and approach to patient care, placing dignity, compassion, and service at the heart of everything it does.
